Activities
One
of the activities most exciting and yet relaxing
is going fishing. El Cuyo has a great
diversity of fish. At a depth of 20 to 25
feet (6 meters) you're able to find mero (grouper),
canane, pargo, colored and white corvina,
mojarra, chac chi,
robalo (snook), sabalo (tarpon), jurel, cojinuda,
ronco, macabi, bagre (catfish), and barracuda
among others. In only 20 minutes your boat
can be at fishing depth, easily in sight of the
nearby shore.
The fish you catch will vary from 1 to 4
pounds (1/2 to 2 kilos).
If you're looking for something more exciting,
you can go out to a depth of 90 feet,
approximately an hour by boat. At this
depth you'll be able to catch fish from 2 to 20
pounds (1 to 10 kilos) or more. Here
you'll find meros (grouper), pargos, mojarras,
negrillos, esmedregal, carito, bonito, barrilito and jurel among others.
When not able to go out by boat, you are able to
fish from the "darsena" (town dock) or
at the town boat landing. The best time to
fish at this latter site is 4 in the morning
You'll be able to catch corvina, pargo, ronco,
robalo (snook), macabi, and bagre (catfish),
just to mention a
few. You can also fish from the small pier
in front of the Cabanas los Flamencos.
If
you want to fish in even deeper water you can
travel to Isla Holbox where you will catch blue
marlin, barracuda, jurel, wahoo, and dorado.
The trip by launch takes less than an hour.
And
when you are not fishing, at flamingos
Cabins you will enjoy a very comfortable
stay in your room that have showers and hot
and cold running water.
To
begin your unique fishing adventure,
experienced guides will pick you up at the
hotel's private dock at 6 each morning,
breakfast will be served on the boat so you can
have an early start at fishing.
The
guides are fully trained professionals that have
years of guiding and fishing experience in this
area. The fishing boats are seaworthy 18 foot
pangas, equipped for your comfort and safety,
that are easy to pole into position. They will
take you to fish in the shallow water
surrounding the El Cuyo. The fishing
spots are between 20 minutes and an hour away
from the flamingos cabins private dock and are
anywhere from 5-15 feet deep. Most days fishing
lasts 8 hours but extra time can be arranged as
overtime. Guides are native to. Language is not an issue
while fishing, for all guides at least speak
"fishing" English although some of
them are fluent English speakers.
Coming
to El
Cuyo is easy, you fly in to Cancun
airport and there our transport meets you. After
a short drive you board the boat that will take
you to Flamingos
Cabins.
Non-fishing
travel partners can enjoy viewing the large
amount of flamingos during the fishing season
(May - September) ,
bird watching enthusiasts praise the island and
its birds. Although snorkeling and diving are
not great, the beaches are splendid and swimming
is easy.
El
Cuyo has a relaxing atmosphere, most
tourists come here to relax with one small
village, streets of sand and friendly people.
El
Cuyo is ideal for exploration by bicycle.
While biking to the village, admire the
magnificent views. Biking

The
whale shark is the largest fish on the earth today; it can grow up to
50 feet (15m) in length. The whale shark prefers waters of warm
surface temperature, in areas where there are upwelling of nutrient rich
colder water since these conditions favor blooms of plankton on which the
sharks feed. They are often seen with schools of Jacks.
The
whale shark has nothing in common with whales except for its size
and the fact that it only eats minute plankton by scooping it up
whilst its mouth is wide open. It normally feeds on or just below the
surface. It feeds by filtering small planktonic organisms out of the
water through its gills.
Whale
sharks are viviparous animals and young ones are at times seen
with the elders.
Whale
sharks are very docile and gentle and, when approached by
snorkelers or divers are uninhabited by the visit.
Since
a few years ago, whale sharks have been coming to the northern
tip of the Yucatan peninsula to feed and mate during the months of May
through October. Flamingos Cabbins now offers a unique excursion
to see these magnificent creatures

Isla
Holbox, one of the world's natural beauties, and is part of the
fauna and flora protection area called "Yum Balam",
an ecological reserve. On the east side of the island is Cabo
Catoche, and the island separated from the main land by the Laguna
Yalahau.
The
Laguna Yalahau is a rich natural habitat that shelters
countless amounts of animal species, for example, it is the home of
the spectacular pink flamingos that come here to feed themselves from
April to October. In the water of the lagoon you may see huge
quantities of fish and even dolphins that swim around. A beautiful
nature show.
Isla
Pájaros, which is the home of more than 140 species of birds,
that nest in it. It is common to see in the Island White Edies,
Frigate birds, Double Crested Cormorant, White
Pelican, storks, Gray Pelican, and pink
Flamingoes. Isla
Pájaros is a natural protected area and you are not allowed to
step on it; you can only reach it by boat. The birds that live there
are not afraid of human beings, which makes it possible to get close
to them without frightening them
